HAPPY SUMMER SOLSTICE!

The next EmotionalMoney entry will be on Monday, July 2, 2007.
I apologize for Monday, June 18th. As I went to publish my blog, I accidentally erased it. It was heartbreaking.
Luckily, I had something else to occupy my thoughts. I was preparing for my graduation from my business course (www.wibo.org) and graduated on Tuesday, June 19th. We had the opportunity to do an exhibit and I was 1 of 3 winners for "Exceptional Business Display" winning a gift certificate to Staples. I was chosen to speak for my class. Being able to give my 2 minute speech from the exact same podium at Cooper Union where Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglas, Victoria Woodhull and many other incredible leaders spoke was an absolute honor.
I am now going to rest and return on July 2nd.

Thank you for your continued support. Have a wonderful 2 weeks.
May your summer be bright and filled in love, laughter and abundance!
I'll see you on July 2, 2007 to announce more exciting improvements to EmotionalMoney.

Here is a beautiful message and ritual by Mamma Donna, an urban shaman.
http://www.donnahenes.net/

My Dear Ones,

[Today] is the Summer Solstice, the longest day
of the year. How long is that? The only way to really
understand how long it is, is to experience it. Get up
with the sun and stay in its presence until it sets.

SOLSTICE SUNRISE: 5:07AM Eastern Daylight Time
SOLSTICE SUNSET: 8:25PM Eastern Daylight Time

Do what the sun does: Declare your finest intention at
first light and follow it as it rises with the day. Express
the fullness of your own inner illumination, your high
noon zenith. Shine light and warmth into the evening.
Set after a long day with the satisfaction of the glorious
lightness of being.

A Simple Solstice Ceremony

* Get up at dawn.
* Watch the sun rise.
* Greet it.
* Bless it.
* Put a circular mirror outside in a sunny place.
* Fill a glass container with cold water and several
tea bags -- black, green or herbal — and place
it on top of the mirror.
* Go about your business for the day.
* The mirror reflects the strongest sun of the year.
* The tea steeps in it.
* Watch the sun set.
* Drink the tea.
* Look into the solar-powered mirror.
* Bless your self.

Join us in person or in spirit at the exact solstice
moment: 2:06PM to chant for peace.

I send you all sizzling solstice blessings,

xxMama Donna

GLAZED HAZE

I was riding the train home, suddenly the lights went out. A gentlemen said "oh my god" and got out of his seat and was looking around fully expecting everyone else to be panicked. We all sat quietly. Being regular commuters we knew at a certain point in our trip the lights always go out. We're used to it. Seeing that no one else was panicking, the gentlemen was confused but decided to sit back down. When the lights came on again he looked relieved but embarrassed. I wondered why none of us tried to calm his spirits by explaining to him that this always happens? Why didn't he ask us why we weren't reacting-what did we know that he didn't? As the train continued on its journey I was deeply struck by this occurrence. It seemed to be a live and in color snapshot of what has occurred for us subconsciously. There is someone who knows that the fear, pain, poverty, sickness and war that is occurring is not right. And they jump up and look around and everyone seems perfectly still in the newly arrived darkness and at first they wonder what is wrong with them? What is it that we know as regular commuters that they don't? We know, the lights probably shouldn't go out, there is some power failure that is happening, whether known or controlled, the power failure remains. But we are used to it. We know it is going to come so we don't react when it occurs. The new arrivals learn not to react; the power failure remains. The next time they ride the train, at first they still react a little but never as large as that first time. They don't want to be embarrassed again. Each time they ride they get more numb until, like us, regular commuters, they no longer react at all.

I remember the first time I rode that train, I had reacted too. I didn't get up and exclaim "Oh my god" but I was scared and looked around. Like him, I noticed that no one else was reacting and embarrassed I remained still and wondered what did they know that I didn't?

The leaders that surround us are forever ingrained in our minds. They look around and see everyone not reacting, instead of taking a seat in their/our shame, they continue to stand, shout and ask others why they/we are no longer reacting. May we each find the courage to stand and shout despite the glazed haze of our surroundings.

Plan of Action: Be Bold. Take Risks. You never know who you are giving permission to do the same.

RAIN OR RAINBOW

"The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain."
Dolly Parton

So very close. I was only a couple of hundred of dollars away from getting rid of one of my credit cards. For those new to "Emotional Money" I'm on a mission to get rid of my debt - in one year. It's been going beautifully. But this weekend, my past pattern rose like a giant wave and almost wiped me away.

I attended a "by invitation only" internet seminar two weeks ago. I was blown away by their use of marketing strategies, surveys and the secrets to being on the first pages of search engines. As I am two weeks aways from graduating from WIBO (www.wibo.org) and am constantly looking for ways to continue my education and knowledge in my field, everything stated at the seminar was in alignment with what I'd been learning. Marketing is key to building a succesful business and building your business online using the global market is the key to the future. The only catch was that the specials they would have at the next seminar would be for that day only. They didn't seem like salesmen, they were direct - told us their prices up front and each speaker seemed genuine. To protect myself, before the next seminar, I decided to work out the numbers and decided that I wasn't going to buy anything. My mission - get rid of my debt first while building my saving and investment portfolio. Until that is accomplished, buy only what I have the cash to pay for or what I can pay off in one month. I was going so I could have the day of training but I wouldn't buy anything. I had prepared myself. I have been getting closer and closer to my goal without feeling deprived so no matter how good it looked I wouldn't buy anything. In fact to avoid any temptations I decided that I wouldn't even take my credit cards with me.

Saturday morning, the day of the second seminar arrived and I buckled. I took my credit cards - "just in case" I told myself. What if it was the opportunity of a lifetime? I'll take them but I won't buy anything. In the first twenty minutes I won $10.00 cash. I'd never won anything in my life so even though it was only $10, I was thrilled. During the seminar, the speaker was humorous and genuine. I could see the hours saved when they demonstrated the market research their software performed of all the major search engines; Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc. with a click of a button. The potential, the potential. The special, good for that day only was unbelievable-"what if?", "what if?", This could be the key I thought. I started figuring out another plan-this credit card, this check, financing... Then when I was ready to sign up-suddenly I was no longer listening to what I had come to learn, I started feeling stressed and things just weren't lining up. I couldn't find my representative, I had filled out a paper for financing-it disappered. I had to start over again. I was stressed but that was okay-this feeling where money was concerned was familiar. But I did notice my lack of ease enough to decide to make a call to two people that I trusted. Ironically they had each left me a message "checking in." I was simply "returning their call." Immediately both commented that I didn't sound too good. I avoided and dodged and finally admitted that I was thinking about buying. Both simply acknowledged their concern that I sounded stressed, tight, and strained. A familiar sound, they hadn't heard for a while. An indication to myself that I was playing out an old familiar story/pattern. My past story: the key to what I need is outside of myself and I don't have the money to afford it.

My "rain" is me. I decided to take those credit cards with me "just in case." From my work on myself, my work with my clients, and the conversations with my ever expanding friends and community, I believe and know now that when things aren't lining up and we feel stressed it's time to pay attention. I wasn't ready to say "no" to buying, but it was enough to give me pause and pay attention. I then reached outside of myself and called before taking further action. My "rainbow" is also me. Reaching out confirmed I was enacting my past by hearing through others how badly I sounded. Now I was ready to put my credit cards away and say "no" to buying. I had no feelings of regret or disappointment. I was sticking to my main objective - get out of debt while building my savings and investment portfolio without depriving myself. "Buying" would have destroyed every piece of my main objective.

Old patterns die hard and come when we least expect them. Rain may have to come to remind us how far we've come, but it doesn't mean we have to allow it to again wash us away.

Plan of Action:
Are your actions bringing clouds full of rain or skies filled with rainbows?

MEMORIAL DAY SUMMER BOOK LIST

"In order to build a skyscraper you have to dig a foundation of a certain depth below it. The higher the skyscraper you aspire to build, the deeper you have to go. It's like an iceberg-two-thirds of it is below the surface." Courtney B. Vance

To contribute to the portions below the surface: BOOKS

These are books that had a profound effect on my spirit and soul.
Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway by Susan Jeffers
The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield
Listening: How to Increase Awareness of Your Inner Guide by Lee Coit
Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance by Barack Obama
Friends: A Love Story by Angela Bassett & Courtney B. Vance with Hilary Beard
Beloved by Toni Morrison
The Four Fold Way by Angeles Arrien

These are books that forever altered my views regarding money and business.
Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert T. Kiyosaki
Think and Grow Rich by Napolean Hill
Who Moved My Cheese by Spencer Johnson, M.D.
Girl, Get Your Money Straight! by Glenda Bridgeforth

These are books that were just plain fun to read.
Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand
Ladies First Revelations of a Strong Woman by Queen Latifah

Books recommended from "Emotional Money" readers:

Charlotte Volage-NYC
Soul Retrieval (mending the fragmented self) by Sandra Ingerman
The Way of the Shaman by Michael Harner
The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron
Writing Past Dark by Natalie Goldberg

Pamela S. Booker-Brookly, NY
In Search of Billie Holiday: If You Can't Be Free, Be a Mystery
by Farah Jasmine Griffin
an elegantly written, honest portrait of our beloved "Lady Day." Griffin moves beyond the tragedy to find the beauty of the song and musicianship that she possessed

Amanda Marsico-Binghamton, NY
While I'm sure I could come up with quite a list of fiction, the first one that popped into my head was The Highly Sensitive Person by Elaine Aron.

Richard Kohn-NYC
I have over the past couple of years been into the biographies of the movie stars of the 20's 30's 40's and 50's. From them I do get my inspiration.
I recommend "The Men of MGM" and "The Women of MGM" They are an easy read and are available in the NYC library system. From them you will learn the wonderful history of the movie business and studio system and how these actors truly "paid their dues" - such actors as Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo, Clark Gable, just to name a few. However my favorite of all is Humphrey Bogart.

Thank you very much to each of you that contributed to the summer reading list!

A moment of silence for those who have passed on.

Ashe.

May we spend the time we have on this planet enriching our "icebergs" so we can continue the work of our ancestors and help make the world better for ourselves and the next generation.

DOTS CONNECTED: BLANK SLATE BEGINS

I am reading "Friends: A Love Story By Angela Bassett & Coutney B. Vance." I was looking forward to learning more about their childhood and the details of their relationship. Somewhere in there I forgot that these are actors and probably the book would contain many passages about their...uh...acting. It was amazing to read their words and identify with every word when they spoke about embodying their characters, the surprises when parts and opportunities came that they weren't expecting, the thrill of being perfectly connected with another actor and being able to use emotions from their lives to infuse the life of their characters. I was reminded of all the parts I loved about acting. I remembered how from the early age of five I decided I was going to be an actor and really thought I'd grow old playing out my life going from one show to another. I was amazed at the sadness I felt that what they experienced and have realized in their professional careers, I have not. Why was I feeling sad? I choose not to pursue acting. Auditions, amazing parts and opportunities always seemed to come to me but in the end, I was never satisfied. As much as I love researching, discovering and becoming the characters I never loved the networking, the minimal pay compared to the work required or having no weekends or evenings to myself. At every closing night, as everyone cried, I was relieved.

At the height of my success, I choose to walk away from acting for 4 years and once back, I choose again to turn my focus to a different passion. Acting regardless of the successes, still wasn't satisfying. So, I was shocked by the sadness I felt reading this book. What if the path I choose from the beginning could have been the path that truly fulfilled me? I feel fulfilled now-when I work with and witness the transformations of my clients, when I meet so many amazing people at seminars and every week when I'm writing and receiving responses to my blog. Every piece of it, I love. Afterwards, there aren't any lights that come up and I don't have to wait for anyone to cast me to get to the part I love-connecting. I realize now the sadness was for the many, many years spent on something that didn't fully satisfy me. Sadness for the me that wasn't comfortable in my own skin and used the character, a show, the accolades as a distraction to hide behind. This time when I speak, it's me. Connecting. Reading this book, and hearing their joy no matter the many hours, the hard work, the loss of privacy-there is joy. Now, there is joy in my words. I thought it would always be acting-instead it's business, accounting- financial counseling! This book that I thought was going to be a nice love story took me to my own past, my choices, to my "what-if's."

We pick up a book, a career, a relationship, a kitten, a friend, make a choice, expecting one thing and receive something different than expected. Sometimes that "different" is a very good thing! Dots Connected: Blank Slate Begins!

Action Item: Before you started doing what you've always done, before you were told who you would and should be, before you decided there is only one thing you can be-at your core what makes you feel at ease and free?
That first thought that just popped in your head-that's it. Have fun connecting!

Happy Memorial Day Weekend!

OUR MOTHERS WITHIN

Stopping in Jamestown, on a roadtrip with my mother to see my grandmother, we observe a mother and daughter spew venom toward each other at the Bob Evans. The daughter is in her early to mid-twenties. After being informed that her mother was there, she comes from the back with a scowl on her face. Her mother says she overheard she was getting off at 2pm and since she was on this side of town she thought she'd see what she was going to be doing now. It was clear she was being checked on. The daughter knowing this, answered every question asked with "I don't know." Both of their scowls getting worse. My mother and I raised our menus in the hopes that we could disappear. Their pain masked in scowls was unbearable to observe on this day before Mother's Day.

My mother has always been my best friend. I've always known I was lucky to have a mother who always made it clear to me that I was loved. No matter my faults, mistakes and bad choices, I knew I was loved. This is a true gift. In a world that can be quite cruel, knowing I was loved gave me a magnificient headstart. My grandmother was the beginning of this path-she forged new territory, not from what she experienced from her family, but from what she knew to be possible from her own heart. My family dynamic could have been exactly what I had observed in Jamestown. My grandmother chose to start a new path for her children-my mother and uncle and me. I've always celebrated my mother and grandmother on Mother's Day. It's my chance to honor two amazing women who have made my journey so much easier than their own. Two woman who are leaders, movers and shakers and have spent their lives placing the needs, dreams and desires of those around them ahead of their own. I thank you so very much mommy, Sharon Ball and grandma, Eunice Simpson for being my "mothers." I love you!!!

If either scenario rings true for you; you and your mother are enemies, best friends or you don't know each other, how much longer will it be the source of the "scowl" or "smile" on your face? While having a glorious headstart-I was always reminded by my friends how lucky I was-and I was. However, my greatest lesson and I was reminded standing in the Bob Evans, was that until we love ourselves no love from the outside will ever be enough. Until I learned to love myself I continously made choices that made my life difficult. The mother in this situation had to know that she would not be embraced showing up at her daughter's job unannounced when their relationship clearly didn't have a track record of kindnesses such as "stopping by because she was on that side of town..." She left the restaurant, without her daughter, livid. But how could her daughter have gone with her? How could the mother have expected to have left any way except livid (disappointed)? My choices of relationships, community, career and my daily existance was to prove to myself that I wasn't worthy of the love I received from my mothers. Once I embraced myself, I was amazed by the abundance of love that I received not only from my mothers but from my community and from nature. This love surrounds each and every one of us. Most often it's right there but we scowl and bat away even the possibility of finding it by setting up situations that will keep love at bay. Embrace and love yourself FIRST. May we each forge a new path, as my grandma did and lay the scowls to rest. There's laughter, hugs, smiles and kisses directly on the other side-it's from within. Thank you grandma for loving your mother within enough to forge an entirely new path for your children. May we all love our "mother" within and pass that LOVE on to our children, our communities and our world.!

"All the flowers of all the tomorrows are in the seeds of today." Unknown

Action: Look in a mirror. To whom do you scowl? What would happen if you smiled?

SHADES BETWEEN A & B

A recurring theme this week-"the only choices I have are A and B."
I noticed this from my clients, friends, and family that neither A nor B was an option that made them smile. In fact, they weren't options at all; they were familiar-but never did these choices provide them with a sense of having their issues, or concerns truly solved. Ironically in these same instances, when someone suggests other options, the first response is always "That won't work because..." or "I can't do that because..." Even when a new idea pops in our own mind we give this same response. But, there are at least a zillion possiblities between options A & B. Just as there are a zillion shades between the colors black and white. When you feel like the choices that you've considered are "for a fact" the only options available: Stop, Breath and Consider that you deserve to have options that make you smile. If options A & B cause you to feel restricted and heavy, then clearly those aren't the options you should be considering. Why? For the simple reason that you aren't smiling with possibility when you think of them. Therefore when you take action on items A or B you are never able to truly release it. It's a temporary "fix" but it arises again or it gnaws at you. A choice that isn't fully embraced because it dosen't cause you to feel good, never really gets resolved.

One of my favorite movies is Matrix. I love the line when the agent says that "they" tried to create a perfect world for humans and it didn't work. "Humans wouldn't accept the programming." (Please see this movie if you haven't already.) We have a built in voice that says we're supposed to suffer. That has been imposed since the beginning of time. It was only imposed in order to "control." This need to control arises because we believe that there isn't enough food, wealth, abundance, etc. for every single one of us to enjoy at the same time. There is. "Suffering" and "Misery" has been programmed into our psyche, fed to us through our own families, communities and the press. However, there are a zillion shades between A & B.

I realize, in this moment, that this same theme directly affected me. One of my kittens two weeks ago had a seizure. I completly freaked out-I just knew he was going to die. When he lived, I believed my choices were-A-this is going to be so hard and B-I will need to give him up because my mantra now is to live "in ease." I mentioned what happened to my friend, not my decision around it, just the truth about how scary and hard it was going to be. She immediately told me about a friend of ours that had had a cat that spent its life with seizures. I had no idea. I wrote this friend and she explained to me if I stayed calm and just spoke to him when he was having them that it helps to bring them back faster. For his second seizure I stayed calm and said and believed that everything was going to be okay. He stopped having the seizure. I wasn't stressed and I didn't feel like his seizure was causing me a great hardship. Because of the conversation with my friend, I was no longer afraid of the seizure and all the "what if's." An option I never even considered-not being afraid and that "my ease" wasn't threatened. My first two choices were based on what was familiar to me-fight and/or flight. "This is going to be so hard" (fight) or "I'm going to have to get rid of him" (flight.) Both made me feel miserable. But I believed that they were my only choices. Reaching out, I was presented with the shades inbetween my A & B.

If your choices A & B make you feel...yucky.
One-Stop, Breathe.
Two-Use your imagination-Consider the zillions of shades inbetween.
Three-Talk & Share with others-don't immediately reject their suggestions (or your own "popping" thoughts. Listen. Allow and watch the shades multiply.
A few of those shades will make you smile in spite of the old familiar self.
Now you have your choices and can take affirming actions.

As soon as YOU allow the possibility that there may be more shades between the familiar choices of A & B, they show up. Every Time.

Action: Rent/Buy the movie Matrix.
Remember: You deserve options and choices that make you smile.

TISSUE PAPER THIN

"Many of our goals are tissue paper thin, and a single courageous step would carry us clear through them." by Brendan Francis

I was reading the Essex Times the other day and saw this amazing image of a young girl, 15 years old, pushing against and keeping back a wall of at least 10 police officers. Most days many of us aren't having to physically live out our courageous acts but spirtually as we move towards our financial and life goals we often feel as if we are physically pushing against a force as real as those.....(you fill in the blank) What is possible when we take the step anyway?

Here is an inspiring story from my dear friend Amanda Marsico and her husband Tim Mollen who continously put one foot in front of the other:
"One year ago we were renting an apt. and approx. $30K in debt. Today we are living in our own house and completely debt free (except for the mortgage, of course). Now, we had help (both sets of parents contributed to downpayment on the house), but we also did some creative shuffling of fincances (Tim cashed out his 401K and we got a good tax refund) and finally reached that goal. It is possible!"

Action: Step, Step, Step and feel the breeze of the tissue blowing behind you!
"IT IS POSSIBLE!"

INTERVIEW: HEATHER SCHEIWE
FOUNDER, EXECUTIVE AND MANAGING DIRECTOR OF ALIVE MAGAZINE!

Hope and Inspiration for our Future.

Heather and I have only met over the phone. We are alumni of Woodhull Institute for Ethical Leadership (www.woodhull.org.) Every time I've spoken with her, I felt inspired by her passion, vision and drive to give other young women an outlet to let their voices be heard. A few months ago she was on a mission to find donors so that she could create a salary for herself and do Alive magazine full time.

Heather: I just got a salary for my Creative Director. She will start getting paid in June!

Samarra: Congratulations. That is so exciting. So, did you get a salary for yourself?

Heather: Well actually, I will be leaving for Grad School in the Fall.

Samarra: What! Oh my goodness! Congratulations!

Heather: Within a 24 hour time period, I received the news that I was being offered a scholarship to George Washington University in DC and a donor called to offer me the money I needed for a salary. I had to decide if I was going to use it to pay myself or go to Grad school and study Law & Women's Studies. It has worked out perfectly. I have had the magazine for three years and I feel saturated and full. I will of course still be on the board but the new Executive and Managing Director will be Jen Dotson. This has turned out to be freeing for both of us.

Samarra: Wow. Okay. So let me start at the beginning. You are 24 years old and you have had this magazine for 3 years. You have over 1000 subscribers and the magazine comes out once a year and has a 25 and younger rule which keeps the magazine in the hands of those that it was created for. What is happening on Sunday, April 29th?

Heather: On April 29th we will be launching our brand new website and Alive Magazine on line. We are having a launch party featuring live entertainment, an art gallery and silent auction here in Minneapolis. We want the magazine to reach more people-we want it to expand nationally and internationally. The online version will come out every quarter and then every year the physical magazine will be a "best of" issue.

Our mission for the magazine is twofold. First, we want to create media that we want to see. People complain about the media all the time but we want to convey that it is not this big scary thing that has to be forced on us, we can CREATE what we want to see. Secondly, and more of my focus, is helping young women gain job skills. We have 10 interns around the country and one in Canada. The most gratifying part of what I do is watching these young women walk in with their briefcases and suits and then seeing them, after we've talked for a little bit, take a breath and relax into themselves.

Samarra: What type of internships do you offer?

Heather: They create their own internships. I found that most internships required that you already have skills in the area you're interested in. That just didn't make any sense to me. I decided, okay, let's create these experiences that will edify young women. They can see and gain experience doing what they love and are passionate about and that will lead them where they want to go. I have an intern in Boston who has created an online art gallery, another that runs focus groups, and another that does editorials. We create it together based on their interests and passions. It is so exciting to see these women come alive.

Samarra: If a young woman was interested in applying for your internship program what would she need to do?

Heather: We offer internships in three semesters; spring, summer and fall. They would need to contact me and send their resume to contribute@alivemagazine.org. You can send them at anytime.
What has been most interesting about working with my interns is discovering what they leave off of their resumes. One young women was a hostess at a very nice restaurant. They found that she was very creative and ambitious and they asked her if she'd be interested in learning how to be an assistant chef. She was excellent and they hired her to do that several times each month. On her resume she only listed "hostess." Another young woman started and ran a graphic design club at her school for three years. She listed "cashier" at Target. It amazes me how these creative and smart young women are always more likely to put their "job" experiences and leave out their creative work that actually shows their willingness and experience to be innovative and take risks.

Samarra: Yes, we are quite afraid to reveal the core of who we are. What a gift you are providing-giving these young women the opportunity of learning the value of their experiences, creativity and passions. What has been your greatest challenge in running Alive magazine?

Heather: The greatest challenge was learning how much I didn't know and how much I wanted to know. Realizing that I couldn't do it all myself. For this magazine to happen, it'd have to be provided off of community and mentorships. That was the thread that ran through everything-community. Influential folks who came along that I'd like to thank are Sian Muir of St. Olaf's Entrepreneurial Center, Jenny Peterson, Marnie Kittleson, Lee Truer, Martha Franke, Heather Mattson, and every young woman who has participated in Alive so far. Thank you.

Samarra: Wonderful. How were you able to take the step and meet this challenge to accept the lessons from your community. Many of us see the challenge and when we realize what we don't know and that we can't do it ourselves, we stop? What made you take the step?

Heather: Curiosity. I didn't graduate with a business degree. I didn't know about marketing, how to lay out a magazine or do a fundraiser. But I wanted this magazine. A magazine for, by and about young women. I couldn't not learn it. The resources appeared. That is what I continue to find. The resources are always right there.

Samarra: Well, it sounds like you are about to embark on a new phase of your life's journey? What are your long term goals?

Heather: I don't know. I'm doing TODAY. I've never lived that way-the 20 year plan. I find something I'm interested in and pursue it to the core and then move on from there. I can say that I would like to be remembered for encouraging others to be free and pursue their passions. I would like to be involved in constitution building. To go to developing countries and be instrumental in having women's rights written into the constitution.

Samarra: Everytime I speak with you, you inspire me. You have such an openness and "break the mold" way of thinking. What do you attribute that to?

Heather: My father. If there was a pot of water boiling on the stove, he'd explain to me at six years of age, that the water, a liquid, could be a solid and/or a gas. He'd always discuss the different aspects of things with us. History, science, arts, music etc. I'm the oldest of two sisters. Tiffany is 22 and is getting married this May. She and her fiance have down syndrone and are highly functional and they are such an inspiration to me. My youngest sister is 19 and she goes to the University of Idaho. My father always encouraged us to do whatever we wanted to do. He believed one should know a little about a lot of things and pursue in depth those things you loved.

I also attribute the way I think to where I grew up. Although I've lived now in Minneapolis for 7 years I grew up in Fort Collins, Colorado. There is so much open, clear space. Across the plains and up into the mountains. My vision was of an open world-you could climb a mountain, walk 10 miles across a prairie or ride a combine (massive roto-tiller that cuts wheat crop) in a wheat field. In Minneapolis, the land isn't like that and it contributes to me feeling stunted.

Samarra: I feel as though I must ask you, as a young women, is there anything you would like to say in regards to the recent tragedy in Virginia and the overall violence that is taking place by youth against youth in our schools today?

Heather: I used to work for this older woman and we were very much alike. Hard working, driven and always working late hours. But she felt threatened by me, so she wouldn't engage. She'd just pile on more work. I eventually had to quit and she stated that she wasn't surprised because she felt the hostility between us. I didn't feel hostile towards her at all. I could see how much alike we were and if she could have embraced our similarites and differences and not seen them as a threat, I think we could have discovered how we could have complimented and helped each other. We are reflected by everyone around us. There are a lot of ourselves in eachother. Because we see our similarities and differences as a threat, we lash out. If we could see these traits to affirm eachother instead of being threatened by them, I think the violence would dissipate.

Samarra: Thank you. What is one of your fondest stories in your work with young women and Alive?

Heather: There was a young woman in Texas. Jen Dotson, the creative director that will be taking over my position at Alive, was conducting a seminar and asked the audience if anyone had some poetry. No one raised their hands. Jen caught the eye of one young women who when "caught" quickly looked away. After the seminar Jen went to her and asked her if she wrote poetry. The girl said it wasn't very good. Jen asked if she had any. The girl said she did-she kept all of her poems hidden away in a book that she had read over and over again. She was ashamed to ever show them. Jen and I read the poem and it was incredible. This girl was 14 years old and her work was amazing. We published it in one of our issues and she was thrilled to have it published. Many of these young women, expecially artists don't even acknowledge their talents. (Read Megan Litchowshi's poem at www.emotionalmoney.blogspot.com-scroll to the end of the interview)

At the launch party on April 29th we are going to have authors, artists and staff members share the experiences that they have had with Alive. It's going to be very exciting to hear everyone's story.

Samarra: I wish I could be there. But for those of us not in Minneapolis, is there any way we can contribute to your launch party?

Heather: Yes. If anyone would like to join Samarra Am Management and donate any of their goods or services for our silent auction we would greatly appreciate it. Every dollar is going to go directly toward helping more young women discover and have the confidence, experience and support to let their voices be heard. If interested please email me at heather@alivemagazine.org by Friday, April 27th. And visit our website at http://www.alivemagazine.org. But remember to visit it again after our official launch on Sunday, April 29th. We've made many exciting changes.

Samarra: Thank you so much for your inspiring work and vision.

Heather: We will also be launching Alive Arts Media-we don't have the official lauch date right now but it will feature women's work of all ages. We are collecting submissions now. I would love to hear from your readers. What makes you come alive? Please email me your responses to heather@alivemagazine.org.

Samarra: Thank you Heather. Speaking to young women like yourself is what makes me come alive!

This is me by Megan Litchowski

A star in the night
A cloud in the sky
A face in the crowd
Do I stand out?
Am I shining brightly?
Am I hiding behind the sun?
Do I blend in?
Can you see me?
I may not be the brightest
I may not be center stage
I may not be noticed
But I hope you can see me
I am not an athlete
I am not a genius
I am not famous
I am me
Searching for talent
Figuring out who I am
Where I belong
Where my place is in the world
I don't want to be the sun
I don't want to be a star
I don't want to be the moon
I just want to be me
What's in my heart?
Do you know?
In my heart
Is where you will find the real me
I'll give you the key
The key to my heart
If you're willing to accept
Accept me for me
This is me
This is who I am
Don't love me for who I appear to be
Love me for me

MOMENTS IN TIME

I listened to a gentlemen say -
oh losing weight is so easy-just don't eat bread. When you go to a restaurant just choose to not eat bread and in a week you'll lose 5 to 6 pounds. It's so easy.
If only you knew, I thought to myself. Clearly he's not a man that loves bread. I'm writing this while stuffing the third delicious home cooked and buttered bagel in my mouth. What is easy for one can be the absolute hardest challenge for another.

Standing levels and levels under the street on a dirty subway platform. I look up and I see all these white things-dust I think. What could it possibly be? A smile comes to my face-the snow from the street has made it underground.
New York, even underground, full of amazing little surprises.

The woman teaching our class- a marketing business owner that has earned millions. She was very ...real-saying from her heart that the lessons are dated and she's going to give it to us straight-we listen with all ears-she's hysterical and border line offensive. The whole class is enraptured-who is this little lady with the energy of a giant, the mouth of a football player and the smarts of a Fulbright scholar. A woman, she reveals, that lost her husband of decades, last year. Through her laugh, bravado and cheer-the pain shines through. She repeats the information about her loss but always it's followed with the rat ta tat tat of a drum-roll then a punchline. The class laughs. Through her laugh, bravado and cheer-the pain, bright red in hue, shines through.

A WORLD BRED IN...

Ah fear. The staple and comfort of life. If things are going well, then look out, something bad is coming. If things are already bad then look out, it's going to get worse. I used to really believe this cycle. Sometimes I still slip back into old habits. But I slip less. I attribute "slipping less" to my theme of the past year. It was "33 and Finally Free." Each time fear rises internally or from an outside source I only had to remind myself of my theme-I was finally free. My need to control, convince and be right was no longer as important as experiencing being free. I could take my hands off of it. I could let go. This year I have had to let go of friends, lovers, art, money, pride and written materials that I thought were worth holding on to. But when my sense of freedom was threatened and I started to feel penned in - more important then being right or convincing someone of my truth - was my stronger need for peace and ease. When I started to feel confused, tight and stressed, I trusted the internal clues that I simply needed to release and be free.

Fear breeds tension, unhappiness, seperation and wars. Being free and practicing love with those of the same intentions towards peace and away from "crazy making" and fear breeds abundance, love, peace, ease and connection. As I approach my 34th birthday on Saturday, April 14th, my theme for the new year is "34 RELIEVED AND IN EASE."

I thank each and everyone of you for contributing to my incredible journey this year. In a world that thrives on creating, selling and promoting control and fear,I wish you freedom, peace and ease.

After the Iliad, the Odyssey,
after the break, the being broken,
after the bondage, the wandering in the desert,
after the sorry loss, the trail back to the beginning,
after the inner Iliad, the inner Odyssey,

after the clouding, the clearing,
after the clearing, another clouding,
after the light, another darkness,

PLAN OF ACTION:
1) Create a theme for yourself.
(Your theme is not a stated goal that may cause you to feel an obligation to follow a set of rules. Create a theme; a statement that causes you to smile and feel at ease.)
2) Please share your theme with at least one other person. (Declaring it is different then just letting it be a secret inside your own head.)
Don't believe me-I invite you to declare your theme to a positive, supportive person in your life and experience the difference for yourself!

A SONG FROM THE HEART
(this entry published April 7th)

The song that rose in my heart, I share with you.
(I don't remember who it is by-I used to sing it with my mother when I was younger)
"Love is all around me, love is all around me, and I know it won't be easy. And I know it won't be easy. I know, I know, I know it won't be easy, with love all around me. There's no doubt in my mind. I'm (we're) gonna make it!

PLAN OF ACTION:
Are your actions a reaction from childhood fears?
Are your actions continously leading you toward peace and abundance?
Our finances are often the "fastest" way to see into the state of our souls.
Take a snap shot of your finances and the first layer is revealed.
Which path are your actions leading you?
Love is all around you-the good news is that the choice truly is up to you.

Happy Easter! Happy Holidays!

SPRINGING FORWARD

I spent an amazing weekend with my mother, grandmother and two kittens in my home. Sometimes we forget how very far we've come until we are allowed to stop and see ourselves through the eyes of our elders. I'm quite full and have a trillion thoughts racing around my head and my heart. Instead of sharing them all in a very long email I'll just use this first week of spring to say:

In school, we are taught to avoid mistakes and get it right. Often that leaves us immobile and stuck-we never get started. But we are ever-evolving creatures and what was "right" 9 months ago may not be "right" now, 9 months later. So why wait?

A WEIGHT LIFTED

When I started Samarra Am Management, I just dove in. At that point in time, I needed to do it that way. Once I decided that it was time to take my business to the next level, I ironically sought out actions I wasn't willing to take before. Paying money to invest in my business education, doing market research, paying for my domain name etc. What was "right" 9 months ago when I started my business isn't "right" for me now, 9 months later. And if I'm still growing what I'm currently doing won't be "right" for me nine months from now. Sandra's family model understood that finances are ever-evolving and the structure wasn't based on reward and punishment. Simply: "What do I need to do to help myself?"

The biggest insight I had during these interviews (visit www.emotionalmoney.blogspot.com) was I realized that the budgeting systems and conversations we typically have about our finances are used to punish ourselves. Many of us avoid our finances because we think it will further confirm our already ingrained insecurities and self-induced punishments focusing on what we haven't done. No wonder we avoid and dread doing our finances. This weekend, my friend Julia, told me she felt I was being too hard on myself. I was focusing on the mistakes I've made with this business and she reminded me of all that I had accomplished. I didn't know I was focusing on the negative until tears came to my eyes just hearing her recite what I had accomplished. There was such a great weight lifted-a weight I didn't even know I was carrying. Weight and punishing myself is familiar so it went unnoticed to me. This speaks to the importance of surrounding yourself with positive friends and family. In case, like me, you get stuck focusing on what you "haven't done," I wanted to share my story and that of an "Emotional Money" reader and friend. I'm still amazed how each time we share with eachother we see ourselves in the other.

Andrea Reese-actor, success team leader, writer, editor & artist-wrote this in response to the March 5th Interview with Sandra M. Bloom.

"Wow, another fabulous newsletter.
Sandra has the most wonderful lightness in
how she explains things. She really does actually manage to make finances
seem kind of fun.
I absolutely love the idea of focusing more on finances coming in than on
finances going out.
It's funny, because I tend to think of myself as being financially
disorganized, but reading this made me realize that I actually have a great
system going.

I have a little book in which I write down money coming in
from Success Teams and my play (Upcoming Interview in May).
I have a little drawer on the desk in which I drop all receipts that I know
I'll be able to write off later. Some years ago I bought a bunch of small
stackable plastic boxes and I attached a vertical index card to each one
with the category of write-off written along the top, ie "Postage" or "Research".
Very soon I'll take out those plastic boxes and line them up on a big metal
tray and I'll pull out that drawer of receipts and just drop them into the
appropriate boxes. I have a calculator with paper in it. I always watch
trashy tv while doing my taxes, just to keep it light.
After I add up each pile, I'll put those receipts into separate envelopes by
categories and write the category and year on the front of each envelope.
I don't give the receipts to the accountant at all.
Thanks again for the great newsletter which is so perfect for this time of
year!"

I hope each of you have a great weight lifted today. My invitation to you is to not focus on the past self-inflicted punishments but to start implementing Sandra's and/or Andrea's amazing tools that will allow you to experience positive reinforcements around what YOU are doing with YOUR money. First, just dive in. Sometimes we need to do it that way.
What would happen if you tried Sandra's financial tools, heard Julia's advice and saw for yourself, Andrea's insights?

As Sandra stated, "Remember, you DESERVE to pay yourself first."
Say to yourself, "What can I do (financially) to help me?"

This is OUR new path towards emotionless money. Dive in!

Plan of Action:
Read and re-read Sandra M. Bloom's interviews (Feb. 26th & March 5th at www.emotionalmoney.blogspot.com)
As you look at your finances-let go of the weight of the past.
The absolutely most important piece as you do your finances: "watch trashy tv." (smile)

Taming the Horse
Bishop Kwabena Rainey Cheek D.D.

This very simple story was given to me by Bishop when I was participating in his six week meditation course. Sometimes with the complexities of life, the simple basics can be the perfect remedy.

"A King had a horse that no one could ride, he offered a reward to anyone that could tame and ride this horse, many trainers came and said I can tame and ride your horse but none did. The first one got on the horse and the horse threw him off. The next one came and the horse just stood still and would not move, the next one came and the horse laid down and laughed at him. The King said I told you no one can tame this horse. A young boy said I can, the King looked at him and asked what makes you think you if all of these men can't. The boy told the King because I know this horse and what do you have to lose if I can't, so the King said try if you can.
The boy looked at the horse and jumped on the horses back, the horse threw him off and started running away and the boy ran after him. The King laughed and thought I've now lost the horse and the boy. The boy followed the horse when the horse ran. The horse ran, the boy ran, the horse walked, the boy walked, the horse drank water, the boy drank water. Then the boy looked at the horse and started running and the horse started running. The boy walked, the horse walked, the boy drank water, the horse drank water, the boy stopped, the horse stopped. The boy patted the horse and the horse smiled at him and the boy got on the horses back and they both came back and the boy looked at the King and said here is your horse. Be gentle and you can ride him, too.

The horse represents your mind and the more you try and force it, the more rebellious it can be just like the horse, but if you take your time and be gentle and be constant it will follow you. Remember you are not your mind. That means you have the power to make your mind follow you and not you following your mind."

Richard Kohn-Theatre & Screen actor
He wrote this in response to reading last week's blog, "A Weight Lifted."

"I think most of us, especially actors tend to focus on our failures instead of our accomplishments. My case in point. Over the past couple of weeks I was the "callback kid" for about 3 or 4 plays - didn't get cast in any of them. What keeps me from being bummed out is that I also got called back for a film and got cast in it. The film: "Across Dot Ave" which will be filmed next month in Dorcester, Mass. I will play Uncle Billy. It is an Indy film with a Sag contract. (Right before publishing this he just found out that he got cast in another film.)Another thing I always remember is what Carol Burnett once said: "If you are talented and don't get the role, you just are not what they were looking for.
Another mantra I try to live by: I have nothing to fear and everything to live for.

Thank you Richard for sharing your positive story. Many times despite what the mind says, we just have to keep running with the horse knowing we have everything to live for-getting on it just might not look like we think. Ride on!

Thank you to each of you that emailed in response to the March 12th issue "A Weight Lifted". Your support, encouragement and shared stories is a beautiful reminder that dots are being connected!
Thank you.

Happy Belated St. Patrick's Day.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
I have nothing to fear and everything to live for.

PLAN OF ACTION

TO ESTIMATE IS TO UNDERESTIMATE
2ND PART: INTERVIEW SANDRA M. BLOOM

EDITED BY SANDRA M. BLOOM

Samarra: Thank you so much Sandra for sharing your unique experience and insights around money with us again. A lot of my readers were very intrigued with your story. Although, in this issue you're going to give specific tips to help people stay on top of their finances, very briefly, my readers are very curious. You or your parents must have grown up with money and that is why you rarely worry about it, right?
Sandra: No, neither. My parents were the children of immigrants. They were depression babies. Samarra, believe me, I remember those early hard times very well. My Mom always used coupons and I used to help her cut them out. Whenever she could, she bought large quantities of food supplies on sale, so we'd never be hungry. Fear from hunger. That's security of another sort. One year we had a week long blizzard and no one could get out to the stores. Because of her pantry supplies, we never ran out of food. The only thing we didn't have was fresh milk. To this day I hate powder milk.
Samarra-So your parents truly passed on to you that money matters are very straight forward and matter-of-fact. Whether you have it or not, either way the systems for what you do with it are exactly the same.
Sandra-That's right. You just have to deal with it. So the first thing people should know (speaking of getting beyond the emotion) is that staying on top of your finances is a year round process. The more accurate figures you have, the more you help yourself. When you estimate, all you do is underestimate.
I will go over three things with you today.
1)What you need to take to the person doing your taxes and why.
2)What items you need to save for your records.
3)How to you set up your ledger.

Samarra: Excellent.
Sandra: Remember the purpose for staying on top of your finances is to save yourself as much money as possible. When you don't have accurate records and it comes time to do your taxes, you are cheating yourself out of major deductions. 90% of the time your "estimations" are wrong because you have forgotten more than you've remembered. The only one that is going to suffer is you.
a)Do not go to your tax person unorganized. The more time that your tax person
has to take to "pull" the information from you, the less time they have to
deal with what are your true deductions. Do not bring bags of receipts.
Separate the receipts at home. Tally up the totals and bring a list of the
categories and the totals. If you have some receipts where you are not sure
which category they belong to or if they can be deducted then bring those so
you can ask. Make sure you have gone through your cancelled checks, your
bank statements for debit card purchases, and your credit card receipts as
well as the paper receipts. It may seem like of work, but it will actually
save you time and money. It will give your accountant more time to discover
that legitimate deduction you overlooked. Bring last year's appointment
book and the check register from the checks you wrote last year. Your tax
person may have questions and find more deductions for you.
b)Take your previous years' tax return with you. There is information that
your tax person will need that will determine what is put on your current tax
forms. (At VITA they will not see you unless you have your previous tax
returns.)

What makes something deductible? Is it "ordinary and necessary" to the operation of your business? To ascertain your "ordinary and necessary" business expense deductions, save your receipts that may apply to your business. Ask yourself do I use this item at least 51% for business? If you throw away the receipt you can't even ask the question and you can't back it up if you're audited. By being knowledgeable about what you spend, you can better help yourself, even in an audit. You know better than anyone else what you spend your money on.

2. Recordkeeping
You don't have to save everything. Some people are anal retentive about it. (What I love about Sandra is everything she speaks about regarding money is in balance-as she voiced these tips I never felt like they were a burdening task-it literally felt like it was just something to do like taking a shower or having a meal.) Save everything that pertains to your business. If you're not sure save it so you can ask your tax person or accountant.
Here are a few basic items to save:
a) Tax Returns (You need to save all of your tax forms for life. If you
paid taxes, clip the cancelled check and your W-2's to that return.
Some day you may need to prove you paid them.)
b) Credit Card Receipts
c) Monthly Bank Statements/checks/deposit slips
d) Any receipts that pertain to Medical expenses
e) Charities
f) Transportation
g) Pay Stubs
h) 1099's
i) contracts
j) W-2's.
You never know when you will need this information. It may be relating to unemployment, Social Security, a pension or the IRS. If you threw it out, you can't prove what you need to prove. Obviously this is not a complete list. But if you spent the money, stop and think do I need to keep this receipt? What if I don't have a receipt? Look for creative ways of recording what you spend. For instance, that business publication you bought at the newsstand usually has a price listed in a corner. Tear that off along with the name and use it as a receipt.

3. Ledger-Having a ledger is empowering. It allows you to know where your money is coming from, how much you're getting and where it's going to. It doesn't matter if it's on paper, in a ledger book or a computer program-whatever system is going to be the easiest for you.
The ledger columns can be:
a) Job
b) Date or Week Ending
c) Amount
d)did the check arrive
e) did the appropriate tax form arrive
f) Who did you work for
g) Any special info you need to note
h) Where money is going
You can add columns as you see a need develop.

Sandra continues to say that you should set up the ledger per week ending.
If you're an actor for instance and you have a gig for 10 weeks you'd write in your ledger each week and log in the columns above when you receive the check. If you have a full time job and you're paid bi-weekly or quarterly write per week based within the time period that you worked. Track all monies that come in: jobs, gigs, an inheritance from Grandma, etc. This is important for actors or those receiving checks where they have had no taxes taken out. It's in your ledger already so at tax time there are no surprises. Depending on the amount of the check, you can decide whether you will need to pay estimated taxes(installments throughout the year), so you don't have a lump sum and penalties to pay at tax time, or if you can offset some of it with deductions. Because you have your ledger you are empowered to make the choices that are going to work best for you!

(Now if you were like me when she said "where the money is going," I thought she meant tracking if I spent the money on a candy bar, dinner, groceries, etc. But Sandra means savings, checking, roth, investments, etc. Overall what I notice is she focuses on money coming in versus money going out. Most budgeting systems focus on where the money was spent but this has no forwarding or nest egg building purpose. Doesn't it seem like it would be a lot more positive to track money coming in versus money going out?

Samarra: Wow! You must have your taxes done in January.
Sandra: Actually I can't do them until March. I have one place that doesn't have to send their paperwork until March 15th so I have to wait until I receive my final information. Well actually I do start it, I just can't finish it without the missing item. My ledger also allows me to make sure that what my employer has reported and what I have are in sync. If they are not, I have records showing the correct amount and my employer would then need to resubmit a corrected tax form. Or with my busy schedule, I may lose track of the fact that an employer didn't send my check. But with my ledger I can easily see that I didn't receive it and after a couple of weeks, I can give them a call and find out where it is. My ledger is allowing me to be proactive. I'm helping myself by being on top of my finances. Eventually what you record becomes automatic. It's a record of the things you want or need to remember.

Samarra: Should we keep track of money going out, in terms of tracking where we're spending money?
Sandra:I think it can be helpful to see what you're actually spending. If you do it, I suggest you use a small notebook, something that is always easy to carry with you. That way it will help you consistently log in what you're spending. Of course, it is imperative to do this if you are a business owner or freelancer. Again this helps you have more deductions. I would recommend setting up a filing system with categories and during the year you can file the items as you go.

Samarra: This has been incredible. Thank you so much for sharing such wonderful information with us.
Sandra: You're welcome.
Samarra: Now for the moment we've all been waiting for. What is a DRIP?
Sandra: A DRIP is a Dividend Reinvestment Plan. Remember I mentioned that my father was preparing to have to pay for three weddings? He did that by using a DRIP. When you buy stock, instead of getting a dividend check in the mail, you choose to buy additional stock with that money. A DRIP allows you to buy a fraction of a share, something that you cannot do on the open market. It automatically keeps growing until you decide to stop. Sometimes there is a small fee charged but it is well worth it. Do you see how this is allowing you to use your money to make more money?
Samarra: Yes. I can see how your father was able to build three nest eggs over time. How can we find out more information about DRIP?
Sandra: There are books in the library on it. DRIP's are usually available for standard companies like Colgate-Palmolive, Verizon and IBM. Or if you know of a company you're interested in investing in, you can ask if they have it. The combination of staying on top of your finances by tracking all incoming monies in your ledger, taking advantage of all of your deductions and investing using a DRIP makes money lose all its emotional weight. When you know what's coming in and from where, it makes it a lot easier to decide where the money should be going.

Remember you deserve to pay yourself first. Always ask yourself "what can I do to help me?" Don't try to do everything at once. Start with a little at a time and expand from there. Eventually it becomes second nature. To Estimate, Is To Underestimate and the only person that loses out is you.

Plan of Action:
1) Have fun setting up your ledger
2) Please share Sandra's invaluable lessons. Share the lessons from this 2 series
blog with at least one other person.
