GLAZED HAZE

I was riding the train home, suddenly the lights went out. A gentlemen said "oh my god" and got out of his seat and was looking around fully expecting everyone else to be panicked. We all sat quietly. Being regular commuters we knew at a certain point in our trip the lights always go out. We're used to it. Seeing that no one else was panicking, the gentlemen was confused but decided to sit back down. When the lights came on again he looked relieved but embarrassed. I wondered why none of us tried to calm his spirits by explaining to him that this always happens? Why didn't he ask us why we weren't reacting-what did we know that he didn't? As the train continued on its journey I was deeply struck by this occurrence. It seemed to be a live and in color snapshot of what has occurred for us subconsciously. There is someone who knows that the fear, pain, poverty, sickness and war that is occurring is not right. And they jump up and look around and everyone seems perfectly still in the newly arrived darkness and at first they wonder what is wrong with them? What is it that we know as regular commuters that they don't? We know, the lights probably shouldn't go out, there is some power failure that is happening, whether known or controlled, the power failure remains. But we are used to it. We know it is going to come so we don't react when it occurs. The new arrivals learn not to react; the power failure remains. The next time they ride the train, at first they still react a little but never as large as that first time. They don't want to be embarrassed again. Each time they ride they get more numb until, like us, regular commuters, they no longer react at all.

I remember the first time I rode that train, I had reacted too. I didn't get up and exclaim "Oh my god" but I was scared and looked around. Like him, I noticed that no one else was reacting and embarrassed I remained still and wondered what did they know that I didn't?

The leaders that surround us are forever ingrained in our minds. They look around and see everyone not reacting, instead of taking a seat in their/our shame, they continue to stand, shout and ask others why they/we are no longer reacting. May we each find the courage to stand and shout despite the glazed haze of our surroundings.

Plan of Action: Be Bold. Take Risks. You never know who you are giving permission to do the same.
